BLUF: European forces could be less than five years away from using combat uniforms that quickly change their colors, patterns, and heat signatures—as well as radar signatures—to provide maximum camouflage in all environments. 

Similar camouflage for vehicles may be even closer to real combat use. 

Different approaches to adaptive thermal camouflage for vehicles are already being marketed by British prime BAE Systems, which cools and heats vehicle surfaces, and SmartIR, a University of Manchester spinoff, using graphene to manipulate infrared emissions.
