EUR: Europe plays catch-up with U.S. battlefield AI

European startups are working on home-grown alternatives to the US-developed AI systems used in the Iran and Gaza wars.

BLUF: European startups Comand AI and XRF are working on AI agents to integrate battlefield systems and operate them through a common interface.

But they’re grappling with ethical questions about the trustworthiness of AI for military decisions. The speed with which US operators approve AI-recommended targets in Iran also raises the question of what really counts as a ‘human-in-the-loop’ decision.

Finnish virtual reality firm Varjo is using AI to construct detailed VR models of real-world battlefields from drone footage. These models can be created quickly for operational planning, mission preparation and training.

Drones advertised as ‘China-free’ tend to have a catch: neodymium permanent magnets in motors are made almost exclusively in China. Belgian startup DRV Solutions is developing an alternative motor that allows for the use of more widely available ferrite permanent magnets.

Danish drone sensor startup Sapient Perception has raised €2 million in a seed funding round led by Balnord and FORWARD.one. The firm uses 10K-resolution cameras to identify threats that lower-resolution systems miss, its founders told The Arsenal.
