BLUF:
The EU is considering following France and Italy with a requirement for satellites to use collision-avoidance services. Risks to space assets have gone up as low-Earth orbit gets more crowded. Space junk is also a growing danger. This is generating demand for surveillance data, predictive software and maneuvering capabilities. Smaller satellite companies have been slower to invest in these capabilities, which may make it costlier to meet future compliance regulations.
Spanish startup Utek demonstrated its technology to potential military customers at NATO's recent REPMUS26 naval exercise. The company's Kaluga USV played a reconnaissance role in simulated force-protection missions with alliance forces.
German SME Wingcopter recently revealed its new Wingcopter 262 aerial drone for long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, which the company will supply to Ukraine via a partnership with Kyiv-based TAF Industries. The fixed-wing drone uses a modified version of the company’s patented tilt-rotor VTOL system to improve power efficiency, reduce weight and increase battery space. It also has an onboard heating system to improve reliability in cold weather.

Andronike Amponash has been appointed chief of staff to Daniel Metzler, CEO of German satellite launch system manufacturer Isar Aerospace. She also remains the company’s vice-president of public defense and government programs, and is looking to hire candidates with security and defense expertise.
Olof Bryggman has been appointed strategic coordinator for digitization at the Swedish Armed Forces. The reserve naval officer was previously a systems strategist for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). He also served as a regular officer in the navy during 2000-2008.

EU member states have approved five major defense-industrial projects proposed by the European Commission in July.
