The EU has finalized legislation for AGILE, a one-year pilot program of procurement opportunities and grants up to €5 million. The scheme targets startups that can deliver new, cheap, mass-produced defense projects within a year or so. European Commission officials say AGILE’s features will be integrated into the EU Defence Innovation Scheme under the bloc’s 2028-2034 budget. The plans underscore the evolution of EU miltech funding from early-stage R&D to near-market products.
Faster EU funding calls may overlap with NATO’s DIANA program, which held its first quick-run ‘Dynamic Challenge’ call in the spring. EU officials say funding amounts and legal guarantees for easy procurement set their program apart. Both organizations are seeking to support nearer-market defense technologies more quickly.
French-owned Thales Australia has announced its new UGV: BladeHAUL, based on its Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle used by British, Dutch and Ukrainian forces. The new vehicle can carry payloads up to 10 tons. It can also provide 110 kilowatts of mobile power for air defenses, long-range strike systems and field hospitals. The company sees a gap in the market for larger UGVs supporting heavy payloads and power needs.
